The Joey Chronicles – Hebrews / “Don’t Give Up” Pt. 2 (Jesus in the Old Testament)
When Pastor John was growing up he had an
imaginary friend named Joey.
These are growing up stories told from Joey's point of view!
Joey sat down in the new brown chair he had gotten for his birthday. It was brown and swiveled around and backward and up and down. But most of all, it was just comfortable. Joey could read and do his homework all day without getting a sore back or neck.
Well, not all day. Maybe an hour or so at a time. Joey wasn’t one of those guys who sat still for very long without squirming.
For the last week or so, Joey had been doing something that was so cool he could hardly stand it. He had trouble explaining it to his friends it was so much fun.
Joey’s Dad had come home last week with a pair of VR goggles that connected to his Mom’s phone and Joey was allowed to play one hour of VR games every day as long as he did his chores.
Well, one game. Joey loved to play Minecraft and the VR (Virtual Reality) goggles let Joey look up and down and sideways and backwards and forwards as he built his new creations every day in the game he liked so much.
There was only one thing that bothered Joey. His Dad had been gone for a week on a business trip and he had promised Joey that he would help him to play with the new goggles. But he wasn’t there.
Today Joey was working on a new castle in Minecraft. He sat in the brown chair and turned his head this way and that and was in the middle of designing the drawbridge when another virtual player came along and starting taking the logs he had found for the gate.
Joey typed in, “Go away!”
But the other player was soon joined by someone else and they began taking pieces of his castle and piling them in the field – away from where they belonged.
As Joey thought, “If only my Dad were here!” another mysterious character appeared and blocked the players who were destroying Joey’s castle.
“How did he do that?” Joey wondered. And the new player actually starting to help Joey build a gate that was better and even more wonderful than he could have imagined.
“Your hour is up!” Joey’s Mom said from the kitchen. Joey took off the VR goggles and grinned, “Wait ‘til I tell Dad about this. I had someone to help me even while he was gone!”
Joey’s Dad came home three days later and Joey began to tell him about his Minecraft adventures.
“And I kept waiting for you to come, and you didn’t. But finally somebody did help me and made my castle even better!
Joey’s Dad and Mom looked at each other and started laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Joey said.
Dad reached into his suitcase and pulled out another pair of VR goggles identical to Joey’s and said, “Joey, I was the one who helped you build your castle. I told you I would and I did. I went online to see how you were doing several days ago after one of my meetings. Even though you didn’t know it, it was me. I was right there to protect you when you needed it.”
The Book of Hebrews talks about a great cloud of witnesses that saw God at work in the Old Testament. Many of them saw and talked to Jesus Himself – even though they didn’t know it was Him.
Moses, Abraham, Joshua – what they did know was that God was with them to protect them and to help them become the superheroes in Hebrews 11 that they could never be on their own.
Joey’s Dad explained this to him the night he came home. How Jesus had talked about knowing Abraham in John chapter 8.
“How could you know Abraham when you aren’t even 50 years old?” the Pharisees asked Him.
Do you want to know how Jesus answered them?
Read it yourself!
In John 8. Towards the end of the chapter.
And I bet Jesus had a smile on his face when He answered them the way He did!
