The Joey Chronicles – 2 Thessalonians / “Face to Face”
When Pastor John was growing up he had an
imaginary friend named Joey.
These are growing up stories told from Joey's point of view!
Joey will be going to the beach and stuff for the next two weeks. See you in August!
(Special thanks to Bob Hearn for actually having this dream for me to use!)
Joey didn’t dream very much but when he did he had good ones. He dreamed about car chases, baseball, football, picnics, driving a car when he got older, playing piano in front of a thousand people (that was scary), and he even had a dream about jumping out of an airplane.
The only problem with the jumping out of an airplane dream was that in the dream he forgot his parachute. He seemed to fall forever until he woke up in a cold sweat right before hitting the ground.
Heaven was on Joey’s mind lately because he had been reading in 2 Thessalonians about how Jesus and His army was going to come to right all the wrongs in the world. And anything with armies caught Joey’s attention.
Joey read that Jesus was waiting for just the right time and that He wouldn’t forget all the bad things that had happened to His people and He would make sure those things never happened again.
So on a Thursday night, Joey got ready for bed, told his parents good night, stacked his purple cow, giant seal, and other animal dolls in defensive formation on his bed – and fell asleep.
And he dreamed.
Joey dreamed that he was with his Dad and they were all of a sudden in heaven. Joey had never seen heaven but for some reason he knew that he was there.
He and his Dad were sitting at a table. It was a big table, and there were more than forty people seated around this table and Joey seemed to know every one of them. They were aunts and uncles, great grandparents that Joey had never met, his older brother that had died when he was a baby and they were all talking a mile a minute welcoming Joey and his Dad to this big table.
The table was covered by a fine cloth and there was nothing on it except a bright light that came from the other end.
Joey said, “Dad, what is that light down there? I think it is somebody but I can’t tell who?”
“Joey, I don’t know for sure but I think it might be Jesus.”
And all of a sudden Joey sat up in his chair and thought about the Jesus he had been reading about. The commander of the Lord’s army. The builder who was preparing a place for him to live. The son of Mary and Joseph who was first and foremost the Son of God. The creator who helped God the Father design the stars and the sun and the moon. The Master Planner who had a plan for Joey and everyone in the world that was made before creation and allowed Joey and those who loved Jesus to be with God forever.
The more Joey thought about Jesus, the smaller he felt. And the more anxious he was that this bright light was at the same table with him and his family.
All of a sudden Joey felt a large hand on his shoulder, and as he looked up he noticed the bright light had moved.
Jesus was standing behind Joey, looking down at him with a beaming smile on His face.
“Joey, I am so glad you and your Dad could join us. In fact, I have been waiting for you and looking forward to getting to know you and your whole family. I have told all the angels and all the leaders of heaven about you Joey, and how much you love me.”
“Do you mind if we take a walk so I can show you off a little bit too my friends?"
“Who? Me?” said Joey weakly. And slowly his muscles relaxed as he realized that he was with his friend Jesus.
“Dad, can I go for a walk with Jesus?”
Joey’s Dad smiled and said, “Go ahead son, just remember it is almost…”
“TIME TO GET UP!” Joey’s alarm clock buzzed seconds after his Dad’s commanding voice and he lay on his bed with a big smile on his face I almost took a walk around heaven with Jesus, he thought to himself.
He placed his feet on the floor, avoiding the cat and dog at the same time.
“One of these days” he said to himself quietly.
